I was so taken with Quilting in the Rain's Summer Love quilt tutorial that I knew I had to try it for my next baby quilt. The only thing I did differently was nixing the border. I conveniently had plenty of Bella White solids stashed away (you need a decent amount), and the heart pattern gave me a chance to pull out my favorite girly prints (Dumb Dot, Soul Blossoms, bees, purple paisley, etc.).
Cutting out the white strips was a realllly fun (*note just a touch of sarcasm here) task - though, one night I just felt like doing it! I wasn't about to go and buy a jelly roll, even though that would have made things 1000x easier. I had the fabric, I just had to put in the work! I've said this before and I'll say it again - quilting should be a sport! You can really work up a sweat!
I LOVED quilting this one! After the practice I had on a t-shirt quilt this week (post to come soon), I was in total free-motion quilting/FMQing mood - so I quilted the whole thing in flowers, hearts, stippling, and loops. =D It was so much fun (to be honest, I *rarely* have FUN quilting a quilt, but baby quilts are so much easier and this design was so carefree - I feel like I'm so often wrestling with a quilt that I enjoy piecing so much more! But I still want to quilt my own quilts and I will continue to do so :) Anyway, I digress...).
(see the flower and heart? Okay, not my best flower, but it was the quickest flower by a heart I could find on there!)
I quilted the baby's name, Lucia...
And then, a few lines on the heart down: "you are loved."
I know it's hard to find on a quilt like this but I think that's the fun of it!
By the way - I folded over the backing as binding again. I'm getting better at this every time, but it's still a learning process! I definitely don't plan to do this for all of my quilts but sometimes, yes. It works.
I am SO happy with the way this came out. I've been having separation anxiety with my quilts lately and I'm sort of NOT looking forward to giving this away. However, the program advisor and secretary in the history department at my college just had a baby, and she's helped me out so much - I thought this quilt was a necessary gift. :) I can't wait to give it to her! Okay, there I go being a little bipolar. Does anyone else do that with quilts, too?
My sister and I had fun outside... :) She's the best. I often ask her for photoshoot help and she is more than happy to do so. How lucky am I?
Messy, quilty living room, while I was pinning - I love how this looks from afar!
We're tuckering in for Irene - I live in western New Jersey so Saturday night/Sunday is supposed to be the worst (my move in day on Sunday to the dorms got changed to Monday!)... stay safe everyone.

I love that quilt - very subtle at first but after you've seen it, you just can't miss it!
ReplyDeleteQuilting as a sport--huh never thought of it that way! So true though. If I had the white I would have cut it by hand too. I have never bought or won a jelly roll yet in 3 years and some odd months of being a quilter!
ReplyDeleteI am a sucker for heart quilts! I love your quilting on this one with the baby's name and flowers:)
Does your sister show an interest in quilting? She needs to go for it!!
Well I am off to quilt my purple quilt;)
Be safe up there in Jersey. My SIL is up there as well. We are in NC. Lots of rain and whistling wind. Praying for all of us on the East Coast.
LOVE this!!!! Turned out so great!
ReplyDeleteI would have a hard time giving it away too... its so sweet and the quilting "you are loved in it" i must be pms'ing because that brought tears to my eyes, thats what quilting is all about!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on finishing a beautiful quilt! Your quilting looks great.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great quilt. Such a simple pattern, but just so adorable! Love that you are having fun with the quilting. It gets easier the more you do it, honestly. It's almost meditative eventually.
ReplyDeleteThis is so beautiful...I love it!
ReplyDeleteI know exactly what you mean about separation anxiety from your quilts! you want them to bring love and joy to a new home, you will miss the love and joy they bring to you! I also enjoyed reading your thoughts about doing the quilting yourself...the enjoyment vs. the struggle with the larger quilts.
Wonderful quilt. I really like the quilting on it.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful gift! I totally agree with your work ethic. Love to quilt baby quilts!
ReplyDeleteThat is a great baby quilt, and I love your quilt-writing on it!! Whoop whoop!!
ReplyDeleteAwesome quilt! Thanks for sharing it. :)

ReplyDeleteVery cute! Great idea for a baby quilt. I love the quilting! It can be like a little game when she's older to try and find different things!

ReplyDeleteI just found your blog after seeing this quilt on another blog. Love it. I just started quilting this summer and I was wondering about folding over the back for the binding (especially for placemats). I didn't know if that was "accepted" or not. Could you refer me to your original post referred to in this post on that subject? Thanks. LOVE this quilt
ReplyDeleteHi Lisa! I can't email you back because you are a no-reply blogger - but if you see this, I haven't actually made a post about that yet, just been doing it for a few quilts. However, it's on my list - I'll be posting about it soon! It is DEFINITELY accepted :) It's your quilt/placemat/mug rug - you can do the binding however you want! Don't let the quilt police get to you ;) If you have any more questions feel free to comment or email me!
ReplyDeleteThanks Jessica! You're right - it is my project!
