My main techniques are improvisational piecing with a plan (both angles and curves - but especially my favorite brick-by-brick improv), free motion quilting on my domestic machine (Janome MC 6300, also known as Elsa), modernizing traditional quilt blocks, and mixing prints from different fabric lines with solids.
Background: I earned a BA in History and Secondary Education from The College of New Jersey. I also have a minor in Holocaust and Genocide Studies, and I wrote my senior honors thesis on this topic.
I've taught thousands of students PreK-adult in public schools, tutoring, and sewing/quilting classes.
I started sewing in high school in a beginner class, but never thought I'd do it again. In 2010, I decided I couldn't afford for someone else to make me a t-shirt quilt, borrowed my future mother-in-law's sewing machine, and got hooked.
What's In a Name?: Why "Quilty Habit?" I started sewing and blogging as a college sophomore, when the work was becoming quite cumbersome. Since I lived at school, I could only sew at home, and I often felt guilty doing so (because there were so many other things that needed to be done). "Guilty" is similar to "quilty," after all! Sewing relaxes me now, and I'm no longer a harried college student, but I still keep the title in homage to my first foray into this essential part of my life.
