About

Hi! I'm Jessica Skultety ("Skull-Teddy"), a quilter based in northwestern New Jersey. I've been making quilts for 9 years, and I'm a sewing and quilting teacher, lecturer, and past editor of a bi-monthly modern quilting email newsletter, The Wonky Press. I'm also the former President (2 years), VP (1 year), and Webmaster (3 years) of the nonprofit Central Jersey Modern Quilt Guild.

My main techniques are improvisational piecing with a plan (both angles and curves - but especially my favorite brick-by-brick improv), free motion quilting on my domestic machine (Janome MC 6300, also known as Elsa), modernizing traditional quilt blocks, and mixing prints from different fabric lines with solids.

Background: I earned a BA in History and Secondary Education from The College of New Jersey. I also have a minor in Holocaust and Genocide Studies, and I wrote my senior honors thesis on this topic.

I've taught thousands of students PreK-adult in public schools, tutoring, and sewing/quilting classes.

I started sewing in high school in a beginner class, but never thought I'd do it again. In 2010, I decided I couldn't afford for someone else to make me a t-shirt quilt, borrowed my future mother-in-law's sewing machine, and got hooked.

What's In a Name?: Why "Quilty Habit?"  I started sewing and blogging as a college sophomore, when the work was becoming quite cumbersome. Since I lived at school, I could only sew at home, and I often felt guilty doing so (because there were so many other things that needed to be done). "Guilty" is similar to "quilty," after all! Sewing relaxes me now, and I'm no longer a harried college student, but I still keep the title in homage to my first foray into this essential part of my life.

This Blog: I hope you enjoy poking around. I take blogging very seriously, as it is both a catalog of all of my quilt adventures and an outlet for my opinions, tutorials, and educational posts. Feel free to check out some of my most popular posts:

Personal tidbits:
  • I love to travel
  • My favorite cities are Prague, Czech Republic, and Berlin, Germany.
  • If I'm not sewing or writing, you can usually find me with a book or watching Lord of the Rings, Parks and Recreation, or Doctor Who.
  • I've been married for 6 years to the most wonderfully supportive husband, Mike. We're high school sweethearts and he's my talented quilt photographer. :) You can read about our wedding quilt, made over 3 years, here.
  • My younger sister is one of my main cheerleaders and supports me constantly from a long distance. When she's visiting, we get up to shenanigans.
  • I'm a former theater performer and barbershop singer. I really, really miss these parts of my life.
  • I have a weakness for Reeses.
